DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH CHANGES EXAMINATIONS

Language Requirements For A.M. and PhD. Degrees Changed--Tests To Be Given in Writing

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In order to systematize the language requirements for the degree of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in English certain changes have been made in the manner in which the examinations are to be given.

Heretofore, each candidate had to show a reading knowledge of both French and German. This knowledge was tested by oral examinations given at odd times to the candidates. The English department felt that this involved needless inefficiency and decided to give the examinations to all candidates at stipulated times in writing. These tests will be given for the first time in January, and they will supersede all other similar ones. The department has also announced that no previous examinations or other substitutes will meet the requirement.

Examinations for All Candidates

No candidate for the degree of Master of Arts at Commencement 1933 and thereafter, will be recommended by the department unless he has passed one of these examinations. Students who are candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Commencement 1934 must have passed both of these tests at least one year before their admission to the degree.

The examinations will be marked "pass" or "fail", and in addition to the January ones they are again to be offered in May and semi-annually thereafter. The tests will remain similar to the old oral ones and will contain three short selections for translation into English, one of classical or modern poetry, one of classical or modern literary prose, and one of modern criticism dealing with literary or linguistic history.
