Following the recommendation of the Student Council that skiing be recognized as a minor sport, William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, decided that a minor sport H would be awarded for this activity when the performance warranted it.
The Athletic Committee is not definitely pledging to award the letter until skiing has developed sufficiently to show that the interest will be such as to warrant such an action. This move, however, is definitely favorable to the skiiers, who are planning intercollegiate competition of a calibre which is expected to merit the minor H.
With the recent completion of the cabin of the Mountaineering Club which accommodates eight men, weekends on Mount Washington have become increasingly popular. There have been from five to 12 men each weekend since the cabin has been finished. This innovation gives the skiiers the opportunity to take advantage of the first snow the mountain has and to practice on slopes which are more precipitous than those usually used for slalom and ordinary racing.
By the end of February, Herbert S. Sise '34, last year's ski captain, and H. Bradford Washburn, Jr. 1G., who will aid in the coaching of this year's turnout, will be able to take the good material and work up their teams. Last year, when the skiing was yet in a formative stage 55 men turned out. With the added incentive of the possibility of receiving a minor H, a larger turnout is expected this year, and more serious work is planned. Freshmen are to be allowed to compete on the varsity squad, and will receive their numerals in lieu of the letter. Intramural races in Tuckerman's Ravine will be held early in March, but other than that and the Dartmouth Carnival, no other competitions have been planned. New Hampshire, Bates, Bowdoin, McGill, and Yale, however, all have ski teams which are either incorporated in their clubs or recognized as a minor sport.
