A decided falling off in pledges this year was revealed by Francis D. Moore '35, treasurer of the Student Council, after the proceeds of three days of registration had been tallied. Cash donations remained about the same, with the Freshman class giving manfully to the tune of $1400 out of a total of $3400.
Contrary to the popular impression that a Harvard man's word is as good as his bond, Moore announced that only 58 per cent of last year's pledges were redeemed. With the falling off in the amount pledged, the Council must raise the percentage collected, and this it hopes to accomplish by aiming for a minimum redemption of 75 per cent.
Despite possible curtailment in its income, the Student Council hopes to have much more money available for its scholarships. Nine men were aided last year, and it is hoped to extend this number considerably. Awards are made from lists compiled at the Dean's Office, on a basis of scholarship and outside activity. The Council wishes to encourage suggestions as to worthy prospects; such suggestions should be left at Brooks House.
