Harvard Captain Withstands Attack To Nose Out Opponent -- Freshmen Defeat Tech, 8-1

Breaking the Tigers streak of twenty-four straight victories the undefeated varsity tennis team squeezed out a win over Princeton 5-4 yesterday afternoon on the Divinity Courts as the Freshmen took Tech's first year racquetmen over the bumps 8-1.

The big match of the afternoon yesterday was the number one singles, in which Captain Frank W. Jones, Jr. '35 defeated Tilney, who was favored to win. Jones dropped the first set 4-6. Steadying in the second he sailed through 6-2. The third was started off with Jones breaking through Tilney's service after having taken his own easily. Then Tilney pulled up to 3 all; four all, 5-4, and Jones broke through again to take the match.

In the sixth singles, Oelsney forced Godon F. Robertson '36 to three sets. With the match, one set apiece, Robertson slowed down and Oelsney made it five all. They jockeyed back and forth, with Robertson first in the lead and then all even till he finally clinched it at 11-9.

Glidden '36, (H) defeated Minnich (P), 6-4, 1-6, 6-4; Sumner Rodman '35 (H) defeated Whitman (P); 6-1, 7-5; Tilden (P) defeated J. Burke Wilkinson '35 (H) 6-4, 6-1; Robertson (H) defeated Oelsney (P), 6-4, 3-6, 11-9.

Doubles: Whitman and Minnich (P) defeated E. Rotan Sargent '36 and Glidden (H), 6-2, 6-2; Tilden and Flynn (P) defeated Herbert S. Wallis '36 and Robert L. Bentley, II '36 (H), 9-11, 7-5, 6-3; Willard E. Ingalls, Jr. '35 and Rodman (H) defeated Goodwin and Bender (P) 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
