SIXTY MEN ANSWER TO CALL FOR FALL TRACK

NORTHROP CAPTAINS VARSITY FOR WINTER AND SPRING

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Wednesday afternoon saw the first meeting of fall track, attended by men coming out for the sport at one time or another during the year. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the three track seasons, and especially to explain the value of doing some fall running in preparation for the winter and spring.

In the neighborhood of 60 follows were present in the Dillon Field House lounge to hear short addresses by Coaches Jankko Mikola and Bill Noufield. Also present was Alex Northrop '38, elected captain for 1937-38 after the Yale meet of last May.

Jaakko urged all those who attended to run in the winter or spring to come out for fall track, especially if they were quartermilers or over. He went so far as to say it was almost essential for the distance runner to build himself up early in the year, and also emphasized the advisability of the sprinter working on speed and stamina during the autumn.

The work done on the track during the next two months will be very light. Precaution will be taken not to develop any strained muscles, one of the purposes of this early training being to bring the athlete gradually into a hardened condition after a summer of beach chairs and porch swings.

There are no meets in the fall. Peak energy is saved up for the indoor meets which start soon after the return from Christmas vacation. No reasonable prophecy can be made this early on the capabilities of this year's Varsity. Less can to said about Freshman. The Upperclassmen are in not too bad a way, however, in view of the facts that graduation took no great part of the team last year and that last years ace Freshmen will supply a happy been to the Varsity ranks.
