OARSMEN POLISH FORM FOR SEASON'S OPENER

WHITE REPLACES SHORTLIDGE IN COX POSITION

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Special stress on smoothing out rough edges in form and building up power featured Varsity crew practice yesterday in preparation for the three cornered regatta between Harvard, M. I. T., and Rutgers tomorrow.

Continuing its string of what some observers have termed "phenomenal time trials," the first boat led the Freshmen by two and a half lengths over the Henley distance with the Jayvees trailing in third place by a half-length. The Jayvees in turn nosed out the Third Varsity by 10 feet.

Certain of a clear victory in the season's opener tomorrow, Tom Bolles' first boat has remained intact this week with the only change being the substitution of White for Shortlidge as cox.

Chace At Stroke

Spike Chace, of course, remains at stroke and Bob Stevens at 7, a position he held on the Freshman crew last year. Doug Erickson will row 6 and John Gardiner 5 for his second season. Walt Kernan, 6 on the 1937 Freshman eight, will hold down his brother's job at 4. Dud Talbot is another who will be two years at his post, number 3. John Richards at 2 and John Clarke at bow will complete the lineup.

The Jayvees who face the same opposition on the Charles tomorrow, will be stroked by Bill Rowe. After a year at 7, Bill Dearborn is again occupying this position. Bill Huenekins at 6 and Jack Radway at 5 didn't reach the seconds last year. John Senior at 4 rowed 5 on last year's combination crew. Dick Nine will be at 3, Buzz Hovey at 2, and Harry Locke at bow.
