City Parking Laws To Be Strictly Enforced

Winthrop and Leverett Car Owners Will Be Affected By New Ruling

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Cambridge parking ordinances will be rigidly enforced this year, because of the hazard of congested streets in case of fire, Lieutenant Charles Mallahan of the Traffic Division of the Cambridge Police Department asserted yesterday.

As in Boston, there is no summons issued for a first offense, but thereafter a penalty is exacted. Already there have been a large number of tags issued, due largely to the unfamiliarity of the Class of 1944 with local ordinances.

All Night Parking Ends

Parking on any street in the city is prohibited for more than one hour between two and six o'clock in the morning, thereby preventing all-night parking. Moreover, Riverview Avenue, which is really a driveway in front of Winthrop and Leverett Houses, paralleling Memorial Drive, has been accepted as a city street. Therefore Bunnies or Puritans who have parked there may possibly awaken to find that their cars have been towed away at their own expense.

With regard to out-of-state cars, Massachusetts has a reciprocal arrangement with certain states, whereby cars from those states need not be insured under the Massachusetts compulsory insurance law, even after the 30 day limit given to visitors.

It is advised that all students with out-of-state license plates communicate with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, on 100 Nachua Street, either in writing or in person. In case of an accident in which a student's car is uninsured and the driver is ignorant of the law, severe penalties may be imposed.
