Eleven men on the Inter-House Athletic Council direct the vast program of House games and tournaments which takes effect this week with the beginning of House football practice on Wednesday.

Including the eight House athletic secretaries, a master chosen by the House master, Director of Athletics Bill Bingham, and Adolph W. Samborski, director of Intramural Athletics, the Council makes recommendations on policy, decides on eligibility rules, and coordinates the inter-House program, as explained in Samborski's report on last year's House Athletics.

House Athletic Secretaries

All Seniors, the eight men as House Athletic secretaries this year are: Fred A. Gilbert, of Adams House; William W. Underwood, of Dunster; Donald A. Brew, of Eliot House; Williams D. McSweeney, of Kirkland House; James W. L. Monkman, of Leverett; Lincoln Clark Jr., of Lowell House; and Richard S. Eustis, of Winthrop House.

Immediate responsibility for the House athletics rests with Samborski, who makes arrangements with the H. A. A. for equipment, paying areas, coaches and officials. As in past years, coaches and officials for most sports will be graduate students or tutors, though professional officials will probably be used for football and basketball games. So far the names of House coaches have not been announced.

Administration Setup in '37

Following a student council report published in the spring of 1937, this central administration of House athletics was established so as to cut down on the number of defaults in House contests and to interest more men in the program.

His success in increasing the number of students who participate in the intramural program is partly due to the interest and support of letter men, Sam- boski said recently. At first Varsity and Jayvee players scorned intramural sports, but in recent years more and more of them have lent their help.

Fewer Defaults

With an all time record of 1223 men taking part in House contests, point deductions for defaults last year showed a decrease of 75 per cent since the intramural program was reorganized in 1937.

In the scramble last year for the all around championship, based on the records of the various Houses in all of the events, Kirkland won first place with 1427 points; Lowell came second with 1417 1/4 points; Winthrop had 1313 2-3 points; Eliot, 1213 1-6; Leverett, 111 1/2; Adams, 1104 2-3; Dunster, 852 1/2; and Dudley, 827 1/2
