LYLE AND ROW HURT IN SCRIMMAGE; FIRST PEP RALLY IS SLATED FOR FRIDAY

Extent of Injuries Still Uncertain

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Old Man Injury, after having kept out of Dick Harlow's hair for most of the season, struck a telling blow yesterday as both Gordy Lyle, first string wingback, and Dick Row, second string right guard, had to leave the field during a scrimmage between A and B teams.

Lyle, a 176-pound Junior who has become almost a fixture in the first string backfield, was the harder hit of the two as he received a painful leg injury and was carted off the field to the medical room. Row soon followed him after getting a blow on the head.

Medical authorities would not describe the extent of the injuries but Row will probably be back in the line-up again today or tomorrow. It was uncertain, however, as to whether Lyle's injury was severe enough to keep him out of the struggle with Dartmouth this Saturday.

Practice at Dusk

Coach Harlow sent his whole squad through a vigorous practice session yesterday with the squad working out against Hanover plays, followed by a regular 30-minute scrimmage between Teams A and B. Once again the white ball had to be brought in as darkness descended on Soldiers' Field and the team climaxed the afternoon with a signal drill under the lights for the first time this year.

In the drill against Big Green plays, the potent Indian backs all but made their appearance on the scene as they were impersonated even to the white jerseys backed with the correct green numbers.

"Dartmouth Backs"

Frank Swirles, assistant coach and former star from U.S.C., played the part of the triple threat back, Ray Wolfe, while Wally Kamp assumed Jack Krol's position, blocking back. Ross Whittier imitated Bill Weirman as fullback, and Charley Putnam completed the powerful quartet with a likeness of Bud Kast.

Row also was the object of attention yesterday as Dick Harlow announced that he had shifted the 190-pound Senior from left to right guard in order to strengthen the reserve situation in the forward wall.

The shift was made because Harlow thinks Row is too good a player to sit on the bench for most of the game, which is what he has been doing as substitute for ironman Chub Peabody. Row, who has been coming up fast after a two-year absence from the gridiron, will probably see more action as sub for Dick Pfister.

In the scrimmage between the first and second teams, Harlow used Yardlings Pete Garland and Don Richards as Team B ends since injured Bull Barnes and Jack Farley have not recovered enough for contact work.

Team A: le MacKinney, It Miller, lg Peabody, c Page, rg Pfister, rt Stannard (Gardiner), re Morgan, qb Heiden, lhb Lee (Wilson), fb McNicol.

Team B: le Garland, It Hibbard, lg Grunig, Ayres, rg Row (Aldrich), rt Shattuck, re Richards, qb Goldthwait, lhb Lyle (Guild), rhb Guild (Putnam), fb Johnson
