WINNING RUNS TRICKLE IN ON ERRORS AS NINE DIVIDES PAIR

Reagan Almost Succeeds in Merriwell Mound Attempt

"You've had enough, Tony, I'm going in to pitch."

Francis Xavier Reagan, captain and star catcher of the Pennsylvania nine was radiating self-confidence when he ordered pitcher Anthony Caputo off the mound with two down and two men on and the score tied five-all in the last inning of the first game on Soldiers Field Saturday.

He was all confidence as he intentionally walked Ed Buckley to fill the bases, and just as it looked as though his ultra-personal strategy might succeed, Lou Clay tapped a roller out to Quaker short-stop Hain, who booted the ball and with it the ball game. On the error Freddy Keyes scored from third and southpaw Mort Waldstein got credit for his second league win, 6 to 5.

In the second game of the double feature Burgy Ayres went to the hill and held the Reagan-sparked outfit to one run until the seventh. Two came across in that frame and the Penn nine went on to win in the eighth by another one-run margin, 4 to 3.

The winning tally came in for the visitors when Barsscs on first with a single tried a steal. Harvard's backstop, Bob Regan, throw to Keyes at second but on the toss Beinstein reached home from third.

Keyes momentarily pursued Barsscs down the base-line between second and first, but suddenly wheeled and rifled the ball in to Regan at home plate. The throw was perfect to the plate, although it might have come a little sooner, but as Beinstein came sliding from third, the pellet popped out of Regan's glove and the winning Penn run had scored.
