YARDLING BASKETBALL TEAM LOSES TO EXETER FOR SEASON'S FIRST DEFEAT

Bixler Amasses 22 Points; Foul Penalties Hurt Crimson

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Feeling the sting of defeat for the first time in four starts, the Freshman basketball team dropped a close game to Exeter Saturday afternoon at Exeter by a score of 52 to 50.

Although handicapped by the loss of Mike DeLeo on fouls, the Yardlings led at the end of the first half, 24 to 18. But when, in the second half, Dean Hennessey and Captain Tom Keene were put out on fouls and Coach Al MoCoy could not substitute the reliable Dick Forster, who had a sprained ankle, the Exeter five went ahead to capitalize on those handicaps and win the game.

Frank Bixler and Keene were high scorers for the Crimson, Bixler with 22 and Keene with 16. Bixler's 22 points included no charity throws, but he made the large total of 11 field goals. Exeter's attack was led by a former all-state high school center from Illinois named Green. Green's 17 points do not indicate the full importance of his play, for with the advantage of his six feet four inches he monopolized the rebounds off both baskets and set up many goals for his teammates.

For Exeter it was their third straight win, while the Crimson Freshmen had previously scored wins over M.I.T., Northeastern, and Brown. The Yardlings do not have another game scheduled until after mid-years when they will meet Tufts on the same night as the Varsity does. The Crimson box score is as follows:   gls  fls  pts DeLeo, l.g.  0  1  1 Smart, l.g.  0  0  0 Rudman, l.g.  0  0  0 Richards, r.g.  2  1  5 Stamphl, r.g.  0  0  0 Sheer, r.g.  0  0  0 Keene, e.  7  2  16 Noyes, e.  0  0  0 Bixler, l.f.  11  0  22 Bergobbi, l.f.  0  0  0 Hennessey, r.f.  1  4  6 Totals  21  8  50
