In cooperation with the Navy's drive for recruiting college men, the University will offer two one-semester courses in Mathematics, Math B, a first semester course which will be repeated, and the first half of Math A, during the next half year.
By taking these courses, Seniors who have not had mathematical training will be able to satisfy the entrance requirements for positions as Midshipmen in Class V-7 of the Naval Reserve.
Seniors, Juniors Can Finish
In an official announcement recently handed out to colleges and universities the Navy Department stated that all college seniors and juniors who enlist under the V-7 classification will be permitted to finish their college careers before being assigned to training for a Naval Reserve commission.
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors, who enlist in the V-5 aviation program will be permited to complete their present college year before beginning flight training. It is planned to train approximately 2500 new pilots each month in the V-5 program.
Urging greater emphasis on science and mathematics, the Navy announcement said. "The demand of the Navy for properly equipped young men and boys is great, and this demand can only be met by proper scholastic preparation in the schools of the country."
