Stahl to Join Varsity Staff; Jayvee Squad Abandoned

Team Closes Season With Win over Dean

The abolishment of the Junior Varsity football team, a move which will free Coach Floyd Stahl for service with the Varsity squad and will place non-Freshmen on a Freshman team, was announced yesterday by William J. Bingham '16, Director of Physical Education. The Jayvees opened and closed their season yesterday afternoon by whaling Dean Academy 20 to 7 on Soldiers Field.

Because the draft has made wholesale invasions on Dick Harlow's coaching staff, and because the number of Varsity substitutes playing on the Junior Varsity squad has seriously handicapped the Crimson mentor, it was decided to eliminate the Jayvees entirely.

'46 Whips Dean

Dean Academy proved a fine doormat for the last stand of the Jayvees. Although the prepaters had complied a record of 17 consecutive victories, they found college opposition too tough.

After a ding-dong first period, the Crimson took the ball on its own 40-yard line and marched 60 yards to a score, sparked by bucks by Gershon Ross and speedy end runs by Bill Cole. Two offside penalties on Dean gave Harvard a first down on the 7, and Vinnie Lenhy hit pay dirt in two plays.

In the second half, the Jayvees got an early break when Jack Farley recovered a fumble on the schoolboys' 15-yard line. A neat reverse by Bart Harvey moved the ball to the 3, and two bucks notted the second score. Bump Hadley tallied, and Bob Fisher converted for the second time.

Then, Dean, sparked by forward passer Sam Whitmore, who is big time material in any circles, took advantage of a weak Harvard pass defense and scored its lone touchdown in the last quarter, when Whitmore passed to Hal Martin from the 23. Ken Knowles drop-kicked the extra point.

The Junior Varsity scored four plays after the Dean kickoff on a 51-yard dash by wingback George MacLellan, who stepped to the final Crimson touchdown without a hand being laid on him.
