W & M COACH THREATENS RETALIATION IF HARLOW USES DOUBLE SHIFT TODAY

Stud Johnson Paces Strong Indian Team

By Burton VAN Vort

Riding into one of the hottest controversies that has raged around here in many a year, the green-clad William & Mary Indians arrived at the Stadium yesterday and went through a short practice in preparation for this afternoon's encounter with Harvard.

In sharp, succinct sentences, the W & M coach, Carl Voyles, said, "I'm glad we're playing Harvard and I think Dick Harlow is a great coach. I don't, however, approve of the way Harvard used the double shift against Penn. If Harvard doesn't use the shift against us, we won't use it, either. But if Harvard does use it, we'll do the same as much as we possible can."

Voyles Leaves it to Harlow.

Voyles' statement puts the decision squarely up to Harlow as to whether he will again employ the much-discussed shift this afternoon when the two oldest colleges in the country clash on the gridiron this afternoon in what should prove to be one of the most exciting games of the season.

For the first time this year Harvard will go into a game as the favorite or, at least, not as the underdog. Around here the odds are about 8 to 5 for the Crimson, Lou Little, coach at Columbia, being among the chief experts to pick Harvard. Down South, however, the odds are exactly the opposite, that is, 8 to 5 against the Crimson.

Johnson, Ramsey Star

The two men on the Indian team to watch are fullback Harvey "Stud" Johnson and left guard Garrard Ramsey. A 210 pound lad from Bridgeton, New Jersey, Johnson provided the winning margin against Dartmouth last year when he kicked a 27 yard field goal and did the same thing this year with a 22 yard goal against Navy. In addition to his outstanding ability as a place kicker, "Stud" is also a powerful ball carrier and a great defensive player.

Ramsey is the other star of the W & M outfit. In the ol' South they are saying in their best johnny-cake, corn whiskey accents, "Hahvuhd can have Peabody. We'll take Ramsey any day." The bad thing about it that "they" might be right, as good as Peabody was, for Ramsey blocks and tackles like fiend and was picked on every All-Southern team in the books last year.
