Paul Perkins Stars In Short Scrimmage

Bloody but unbowed, the Crimson eleven swung into the fifth week if its season yesterday afternoon, and began work on another tough task in a suicide schedule, preparation for West Point's Cadets.

Two tiny rays of hope pervaded an otherwise dull, gloomy practice session, when casualties Sid Smith and Steve Mallett appeared at Soldiers Field in uniform.

Smith May Play

Smith made his first appearance in moleskins since his injury in the William and Mary tussle, and he hobbled quite perceptably, but there is a possibility that he will be ready for Earl Blaik's forces Saturday.

Out two weeks with an infection. Mallett bolstered an already strong tackle squad, but another addition to the gang won't bring tears to Harlow's eyes. Steve will certainly be ready physically for the Cadets, and he too may see some action.

Many Players Absent

Practice itself was more noticeable for its absentees than for those present. Mil Sci drills, labs, and the usual Monday afternoon duties kept Jack Fisher, Dick Andersen, Jack Comerford, Stan Durwood, Leo Flynn, Bill Barnes, and a number of scrubs out of Soldiers Field.

There was thus little seperation of players into teams, and the A squad, depleted as it was, showed few changes. Tom Cowen, whose offensive play in the first half of the Dartmouth battle was outstanding, alternated with Wayne Johnson at first team fullback. Don Forte, who seems due to make his initial 1942 appearance this weekend, was an unofficial member of the A squad as it ran through plays at the end of an abbrevated session.

What was left of the Varsity scrimmaged against an amalgam of Jayvees and Freshmen, in which Paul Perkins ripped off a number of long gains on line plunges, and Bart Harvey was particularly outstanding at wingback. Brought up from the D squad in the middle of the session, the baseball captain swept the scrub ends several times, twice running the route.

Team A: le, W. Flynn; it, Hibbard; lg, Guidaitis; c, Gardiner; rg, Kamp; rt, Stannard; re, Dudley; qb, Anderson; wb, Wilson; tb, Richards; fb, Johnson, Cowen.
