18-19 Draft Petition Gets 130 Signatures

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A petition requesting Congress to strike out the amendment of the 18 and 19-year-old draft bill which stipulates that men under twenty serve a year of training prior to being shipped overseas was circulated in four House dining halls yesterday by a three-man committee.

Chandler Davis '46, head of the all Freshman group, estimated last night that 130 students, all of whom were in the age limit affected by the bill, had signed the petition. If 300 or more names can be obtained, the petition will be sent to Congress. The rest of the dining halls will be canvassed today.

The provision under fire is present only in the Senate's version of the bill, and a joint Congressional conference can still eliminate it. No reference was made in the student petition in regard to the deferment of college students.
