SOCCER TEAM TOPS TUFTS 5-0 IN BRUISING GAME

Squad Makes Start That Augurs Success

By Joseph H. Sharlitt

Held scoreless through a bruising first half, Coach Jim MacDonald's Varsity soccer team ran roughshod over a bewildered Tufts eleven to register a 5-0 decision Saturday afternoon on the Business School field.

For the first two periods the Crimson booters kept the ball within striking distance of the Tufts goal, but all scoring attempts were thwarted by a tight Jumbo goal defense that seemed all but impregnable. On at least half a dozen different attacks, the Crimson forward wall carried the ball to the mouth of the Tufts goal only to be stopped by a desperate set of blue defenders.

In the third period the Crimson could not be denied. Jack Calhoun rammed one home after two minutes of the period had gone by and Jim Apthorp tallied on a pass from Jack Dixon two minutes later. The faltering Tufts defense was pierced once more late in the third quarter when Eli Burman counted on a pass from Apthorp.

Drake and Calhoun Tally

Thayer Drake, a speedy outside forward, took advantage of a Jumbo miscue to tally on a free shot in the opening minutes of the final period. The jamboree was closed with another score by Jack Calhoun and from that point on there was little for the men from Medford to do except fill the air with desperate stabs at goalie Thompson.

In this rousing victory the 1942 squad proved that it has the stuff to carry it to a highly successful record for the current campaign, for Tufts had ten Seniors in its opening lineup' and was generally considered to be one of the top teams in in the New England loop. With the opener successfully under its belt, the legmen take on Clark University Saturday in another league tilt.

The Harvard lineup:

Doug Thompson, goalie; Bud Killam, left fullback; Bob Harbison, right fullback; George Mallory, left halfback; Jack Clarke, center halfback; Ward Slingerland, right halfback; Eli Berman, left outside; Capt. Dick Gifford, left inside; Henry Murphy, center forward; Thayer Drake, right inside; Jack Calhoun, right outside.
