WAR FORCES 1943 ALBUMS TO MERGE

Yearbooks Join To Permit War Issues

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Plans to consolidate the Senior Album, Freshman Redbook, and House Year Books next year into one Harvard Album that will be a complete record of the members and activities of the senior and Freshman classes were announced yesterday by the Senior Album Committee.

According to Harry Newman '42, chairman of the committee, the move has been taken on the suggestion of the Freshman Committee of Phillips Brooks house, as the only practical means of continuing any of the publications during wartime.

By increasing the possible circulation from 800 to 2000, it is hoped that advertising will be unnecessary in the new Album. The budget of the combined publications will be reduced from $18,000 to $5,000 in order that the book can sell for around $5.00.

Economy Necessary

Emphasizing that the committee felt that the economy was necessary, Newman stated that large sums of money should not be spent during wartime on such "luxury" publications. In addition, the new yearbook will reduce the amount of time that any individual will have to spend.

According to Andrew H. Wright '45, chairman of the Freshman Committee, the idea was proposed after it was suggested that a decrease in advertising might force the Redbook to suspend publication next year, thus removing one of the few remaining bonds of unity between the scattered Yardlings. "Lack of advertising will be immaterial under the new program," he said, and disclosed that Redbook officials had approved of the scheme.

Layout Simplified

As planned at present, the entire layout of the book will be simplified by printing 21 pictures to a page and by reducing the amount of space allocated to the various activities. It is hoped that an account of every student and of every organization in the two classes can be condensed into 250 pages, making the combined album substantially smaller than the Senior publication this year.

To head the board the retiring officers will select a Junior chairman. A freshman editor will also be chosen to supervise the Yardling section of the book and circulation among that class.
