Improved Tennis Team Seen For This Season

Everts, University Champ, Leads Squad on Tulane Trip

By A.edward Rowse

Even though Coach Jack Barnaby does not expect to come back after vacation with a team cup from the Tulane Tournament, he cannot help but expect a better season than last year when the team swings into its regular schedule.

With three out of last year's top four men back again, plus Al Everts, University champ, it will take more than a minor miracle to keep the team from improving over last year's less than mediecre season.

Everts, the first man to win the University tournament as a Freshman since the days of Dave Burt, did not play tennis last year on his Freshman team, but preferred to play baseball. He has an almost flawless game, however, and can be considered an equal match for anyone in collegiate tennis circies today.

Others to Go

In addition to Everts, Coach Barnaby expects to take the following men to New Orleans for the round robin tournament sponsored by Tulane University: Jim Jenkins, Hugh Hyde, Captain orme Wilson, Russ Ellis, Will Nicholl, and Lindley Burton. The group will leave Saturday morning.

Following Everts on the team ladder is Jim Jenkins, the smallest member of the team, who played in the first singles slot all last season. He has a steady, accurate game and, outside of Everts, has had, perhaps, the greatest amount of experience.

Closely on Jenkins' heels as a singles player comes Hyde, the tallest man on the squad, who usually teams up with Everts to form the number one doubles team. Captain Wilson and Ellis, two veteran Seniors, round out the first five singles positions, which, however, are not definite as yet.

Sixth Spot Open

Nicholl and Burton will have a head start in the fight for the last singles slot because of the spring trip, but they will have to encounter a good deal of opposition from a host of aspirauts for the honor, including Howie Ezell, who played the position most of last year.

Such talented Sophomores as Ted Cohn and Thorn Kissel, plus Juniors Jack Clark and Tom Sears are among the hopefuls. Aubrey Gould and Don Daniols, lettermen from last year, will not be able to play this year.
