Varsity Nine To Battle Six Foes On Southern Trip

Burgy Ayres Not to Make Annual Jaunt With Squad

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Opening a vacation campaign of six Southern contests, Floyd Stahl's Varsity baseball club meets Georgetown Monday afternoon at Washington, commencing a 23-game schedule that will not end until the second Yale battle June 6.

Seventeen players will make the annual trip with Stahl and will leave Cambridge Sunday noon. After meeting Georgetown, they go on to games with Johns Hopkins, Navy, George Washington, and two with Penn, all on successive days throughout the week.

On a corresponding tour last spring, the Varsity won only one of four games, losing the other three to teams it encounters again this time. Navy won 7-6, Georgetown 7-4, and George Washington held the Crimson to a two-hit, 1-0 shutout.

Ayres Will Not Travel

Hardest stroke of bad luck for the nine was the announcement that Burgy Ayres will not join the squad for this trip Swamped under preparations for military service, Ayres has not had any time to train as yet, but does expect to come out after the vacation.

On the trip, Captain Lou Clay heads a staff of five pitchers which includes lone lefthander Mort Waldstein, Juniors John Farley and George Harding, and Sophomore Joe Phelan. On the other side of the plate, Paul Delahoyde has the edge over Gerard Callanan, both of whom will make the trip. Fred Troy is incapacitated with a broken finger.

The infield will probably line up with Ed Fitzgibbons, converted outfielder, at first; Bart Harvey on second, Jay Gleason at short, and Gil Whittemore on third. Sophomore Thayer Drake will serve as utilltyman.

In the field, Ed Buckley will be at center flanked by Bill Persons in right and either Bull Barnes or Brooks Heath in left. Bill Hausserman will fill in the weak spots.

Following vacation, the nine meets Boston University on April 11, and then travels to West Point, Princeton and Columbia, to play three games in four days. The team returns to face Northeastern on the Soldiers Field diamond, and then opens a long home stand against the members of the Eastern Intercollegiate loop.
