Compulsory Athletics Will Include Boxing Training Aims At Greater Combat Alertness

Lamar Claims Program Will Develop Fighting Technique

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Asserting that boxing develops the spirit of alertness, Henry N. Lamar, Varsity boxing coach, outlined plans to include fisticuff instruction in the new compulsory athletic program. Lamar plans to "eliminate the frills" in the proposed program to turn out aggressive and alert army material.

"Ninety per cent of all bayonet technique, and a great part of the art of any type of physical combat, can be learned through successful boxing instruction," Lamar claimed. "The habit of consecutive thinking," that important quality of split second decisiveness, can be inculcated only through actual contact with fighting he added.

Infighting Stressed

The emphasis in the new course will be on fundamentals of good "infighting," heads up close combat, rather than on putting out a number of fancy ring competitors. Six standard blows will be taught, all that are necessary to combine with American determination in any single fighting victory," Lamer stated.

Emphasising that men here are now unprepared for active combat the coach said that the new course will try to achieve the alertness and physical equipment vital to national preparedness. The efficient fighting man must not only he trained in the technique of offense, but must be charged with the proper fighting spirit. "That is our job," he said.
