EDDY DUCHIN RUMOR FALSIFIED BY NAVY

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In revealing that Eddie Duchin never did arrive in the Yard, and in having the central Yard path widened and paved in a startling gray for marching, the Navy has once more made its presence felt around Harvard.

It was on last Saturday morning that former Yardlings scratched their heads in amazement as maintenance men with picks and shovels dug into the sacred lawns of the Yard and turned its chief path from traditional black to bizarre gray. The reason was merely this: the old path had not been wide enough to hold a platoon of men three lines deep, during the formal color raisings and color lowerings held daily by the Navy men. It was not beneficial either for the lawn or for military order that the Guard of Honor should have to stand on the grass. As for the color, the walk will be black in no time, Yard Cops predict.

The mysterious case of Eddie Duchin has not been completely solved as yet. His failure to arrive has served only as a source of embarrassment to the Boston reporters who have been thronging the Yard for interviews.
