PRINCETON ADVANCED MIL SCI MEN PLACED ON ACTIVE DUTY

Started Under Specialized Training Program Monday

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Princeton's ROTC was called to active duty Monday as 375 soldiers arrived there to start college work under the Army's Specialized Training program. This does not necessarily mean, however, that the program will be inaugurated at Harvard in the near future.

Three hundred of the now trainees are taking the basic engineering curriculum, while the other 75 belong to the Area and Language School. The ROTC was activated shortly before the troops arrived, and is now quartered in barracks and eating meals as a unit.

No Action Here Until May

Despite the speed with which Princeton's program was started, there now seems little chance that similar action can take place here before the first of May at the earliest, and it is very possible that the program will not be under way before July.

An explanation for the discrepancy in the starting dates is the fact that Princeton is in a different Service Command from Harvard and Yale. Reports from other colleges, furthermore, indicate that even where schools were scheduled to begin, troops have not arrived on the date set. M. I. T., for example cleared its dormitories for basic trainees several weeks ago, but they have not yet begun to arrive, probably due to difficulty which the Army is having in finding soldiers willing to return to college.

Army, Navy Plans About Set

Simultaneously, a release from Washington announced that selections for the Army and Navy programs were about completed. The final work of contracting, however, is still far from finished.

Announcement at Princeton that the program was to be under way was made only 12 days before the first troops arrived. To make room for them, the Freshman dining hall had to be exercised.
