A total of $5,695,921.19 in gifts has been given to the University during the past year, President Conant announced last week, with the funds earmarked for such diverse Harvard functions as the replacement of the trees in the Yard and research in epilepsy.

Gifts and legaries received as capital amounted to $2,376,392.48; gifts for immediate use $1,819,528.71, and gifts for construction $1,500,000.

The last-named donation is the gift of Thomas W. Lamont '92, New York financier, for the establishment of a new undergraduate library to be erected on the present site of the Dana-Palmer House inside the Yard. The Palmer House, long a landmark in Harvard architecture, will be moved across Quincy Street into the area formerly occupied by Hocking House. Funds for the relocation project came in the form of an anonymous gift of $75,000.

Gifts for Capital

Other gifts included $100,000, given anonymously for geophysical research, $150,000 from the estate of Marlon Ruby Case for the Arnold Arboretum, numerous Harvard fund subscriptions totalling $113,400.28, and other grants which the University listed as "gifts for capital," such as funds for the treatment of epilepsy, upkeep of the Yard, applied science, and the Music Department.

Under the heading of gifts for immediate use came the donations for the Palmer House relocation, gifts grouped under the Commonwealth Fund for the study of arthritis, delinquincy study in the Law School, studies in endocrinology, medical-psychiatric teaching, bacterial nutritive requirements and cancer research.

New Laboratory

The Harvard-Yenching Institute was the donor of a $75,000 gift, and the Corn Products Refining Company gave $60,000 for research in physical chemistry. Erection of a new building to be used as a laboratory by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health was provided for by a gift of $150,000 from the Godfrey M. Hyams Trust. There were also three separate donations from national medical research groups for studies in infantile paralysis and cancer.

Rockefeller Foundation grants totalling nearly $500,000 were provided for research in numerous fields, ranging from psychiatry to the development of Slavic studies, and the estate of Sarah Elizabeth de Quirez, Countess of Santa Eulalia, contributed funds for the purchase of the Pahla Library of Portuguese literature and history for the College Library.

Mr. Lamont's undergraduate library gift, to be supplemented by an additional $1,500,000 essential to the completion of the project, was the only donation listed for University construction.
