Few Apply for Rhodes Grant; Deadline Near

With scarcely a dozen applications for transoceanic study under Rhodes Scholarships on his desk, Arthur R. Borden '39, assistant dean of the College, yesterday urged all aspirants for Oxford study grants to apply to his office as soon as possible.

Deadline for mailing records to the State Selection Committee is Saturday, November 1. Applicants must submit their blanks and receive an interview from a member of the University's recommendations committee will before the date, Borden said.

If a University recommendation is forthcoming, this must be mailed to the State Committee along with the application blank, he explained.

Costs Pre-paid

Men awarded a scholarship will enter Oxford in October, 1948, and will receive two, or possibly three, years of free study, with most expenses paid.

A student applying for a War Service Scholarship, open only to veterans, must be between the ages of 19 and 31, and must now have at least Sophomore standing. To be eligible for a regular grant, the maximum ago is 25 years, and the applicant must be at least a Junior.

Rhodes Scholarships went to six University students last year, Borden remarked. Forty-eight United States citizens will receive the award for 1948-1949, but only six of these may be applicants from New England institutions.
