Banker's Gift Endows Music Professorship

New York Financier Gives $250 Thousand

A $250,000 gift from a retired New York banker will result in the establishment of a new teaching chair in the Music Department, to be known as the Walter W. Naumberg Professorship of Music.

The endowment, given by Walter W. Naumberg '89, former member of the banking firm of E. Naumberg and Company, follows earlier gifts from him and his father, Elkan Naumberg. These donations have made possible the Naumberg Fellowships for graduates of the College who have shown marked ability in music composition.

Expansion in the permanent staff of the Music Department, a need which A. Tillman Merritt, associate professor of Music and chairman of the department, described as becoming "increasingly great with the growing number of students who have been coming here for the study of music" will result from the gift.

Long maintaining an interest in the promotion of music and musical talent here and in New York, Naumberg is a member of the visiting committee of the department of Music, and is a trustee of the New England Conservatory of Music.
