To get the checks out on time, rather than to short change the customers, was the explanation offered yesterday by the Veterans Office to married veterans who received a $65 award instead of the $90 they expected.

Miss Margaret Witt, Weld Hall veteran of check disorders, said that to save tmie the Boston Finance Division of the Veterans Administration eliminated the award notice telling each veteran how much money he was entitled to. Finance then sent out $65 checks to all, intending to make up the difference by December 1.
