Ulen Mermen Stage Upset Win Over Navy as Freshmen Beat St. George

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

New England proved an unnavigable shoal for the Navy swimmers this weekend, as fresh from a 47 to 28 reversal up at Dartmouth the night before they foundered unexpectedly before Hal Ulen's men last Saturday night 45 to 30.

Earlier in the afternoon the Freshmen set the pace in the Indoor Athletic Building Pool at the expense of St. George's Prep to a score of 36 to 30.

Only varsity outfit to remain undefeated through the mid-year campaigns, the mermen kept the slate clean for the fifth time Saturday when they were rated less than even going in. Coach Ulen's shrewd distribution of his strength, coupled with the drive of Jerry Gorman in the distance events, and the diving of Bob Aaron and Tom Drohan, was a key factor in the victory.

Sailors Look Good

The middles began ominously by taking the medley relay by a healthy margin, but never got within a point of the Crimson cntil they copped the first two places in the backstroke, paced by Sailor Tom Lechner's effortless performance.

Firsts by Hawaiian Bill Kanakanui in the two sprints also kept the cadets in the fight until the Varsity's Jerry Gorman and Forbes Norris swept the 440-yard freestyle. All eyes were upon Norris in this last event before the relay, as his second finish over Navy Millar in this event clinched the outcome of the battle. Hence the surprise triumph of the 400-yard freestyle relayers Norm Watkins, John Watkins, Walt Bullard, and Bill MacVicar turned a one-point edge into a 15-point rout.
