Batsmen Club U-Conns, Lose To Holy Cross

Crusaders Hand Connolly First Setback of Campaign, 8-7; Connecticut Walloped, 13-7

Diamond disaster, in the form of a nightmarish ninth inning that produced four runs for Holy Cross, spoiled the Varsity baseball team's bid for a perfect weekend Saturday afternoon at Worcester, when the Crusaders squeaked out and 8 to 7 victory.

The Crimson overcame an early Connecticut lead Friday afternoon to subdue the U-Conns at Soldiers Field, 13 to 7. Coach Adolph Samborski's squad has now won five games in seven starts.

Connolly's First Loss

Red Connolly, who had won three in a row for the Varsity, seemed on his way to a well-deserved victory over the Crusaders, for whom he pitched as a Freshman in 1942, when the roof fell in on the Crimson in the ninth.

Holy Cross took an early lead with single runs in the second and third innings, but the Varsity enjoyed two big innings--tallying four in the fourth and three more in the fifth--and led the Worcester nine, 7 to 4, until the final frame. Connolly had given up only three hits in eight innings, but seven walks and three Crimson errors gave Holy Cross its four runs.

Two Varsity Errors

Two hits and a Varsity error produced the fifth score for the home team in the ninth, and then Joe Cunnane whaled a three-base hit to right field to tie the score. With two out, pitcher Al McEvoy wafted a fly to center field which the Crimson's John Caulfield dropped, and Cunnane scored the winning run.

In the victory over the U-Conns on Saturday, relief pitcher Ira Godin took over from starter Jack Wallace in the fourth inning and allowed Connecticut only two hits as the Varsity rallied to win.

The visitors picked up four runs in the first frame on five base hits; but the Crimson tied the score in the fourth, added two in the sixth, and six more in the seventh to pull away for an easy triumph.
