Varsity Drills On Punts and Pass Defense

Combined B and C Squads Oppose '51

By Robert W. Morgan jr.

Reserves got a special workout yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field as a combination of the present Varsity B and C football squads scrimmaged Henry Lamar's Freshmen for more than an hour.

At the same time, the A squad ran through intensive signal drill. All teams had worked earlier on forward passing and pass defense, as well as punt formation plays. Chuck Roche now appears to be the leading backfield candidate for kicking honors Saturday against Western Maryland, although he may share this department with Wally Flynn and Walt Coulson, two ends who did most of the Varsity punting last fall.

Freshmen Defend

During the scrimmage, the Freshmen remained constantly on the defensive, and for the second straight day provided a target for the offensive plays of their seniors. While the Varsity made notable gains with abandon, the Yardlings rallied on more than one occasion to stop them cold and attracted favorable attention by their spirited play.

Freshman mentor Henry Lamar, who seems to be coaching an all-star unit this year, was especially pleased with some of his previously little-heralded Freshmen.

After the contact work ended, Coach Harlow commended Roche and diminutive Paul Lazzaro for outstanding play in the backfield, and John Fiorentino for his job at end.

No Serious Injuries

As the opening game draws near, the team finds itself fairly well off with respect to injuries. While a number of key players were sidelined during the week leading up to last year's curtainraiser with Connecticut, the squad this fall has come through several weeks of scrimmage and two rough contests with Boston College without serious casualties.

The lineup in yesterday's scrimmage: le, Florentine; lt. Markham; lg, Drvaric; C, Glynn and Hickey; rg, Guidera; rt, Gorczynski; re, Leavitt; qb, Noonan; rhb, Warren; lhb, Roche; fb, Lazzaro.
