Garrity Sparks Terriers To 6-2 Hockey Victory

Class, they say, always tells. B.U.'s hockey team coasted through the first period, but clearly outplayed the varsity thereafter, to hand the Crimson it first loss, 6 to 3, at the Gardon yesterday.

The Terriers, playing their first game, let the Crimson pick up an early lead on goals by Nat Harris and Bill Timpson. Meanwhile, the Crimson defense checked hard enough to keep the B.U. forwards off balance, unable to press an attack. The Crimson led at the end of the first period, 2 to 0.

Apparently B.U. needs about 20 minutes to get organized, because with the start of the second period, the Terriers began to play as a team; the game was decided by the 11-minute mark.

At 3:20 Jack Martin stepped into a fast pass from Co-Captain Jack Garrity and lined a 50-feet screen shot past Crimson goalie Brad Richardson. Richardson played well, stopping 29 drives, many of them close in. The only goal which was at all his fault was the tying point, scored by Dick Kelley at 5:58 after Richardson failed to clear on Garrity's drive.

B.U. took the lead permanently at 10:24 when John Kelley scored on a high hard shot. Half a minute later, Co-Captain Ed Cahoon tipped the puck in to climax a ganging attack. The Crimson was one man short during both of these scores, and the defense didn't seem to be able to handle B.U.'s extra-manplays. The Terriers, clearly faster and sharper-passing, set up and took any shots they wanted.

Conversely, when Harvard had the manpower advantage, it couldn't keep the puck in the B.U. zone. The Terrier defense would stop the drives and then ice the disk neatly. Only Amory Hubbard, Harris, and Captain Lew Preston could do much to advance the puck.

The Crimson defense sank to its lowest point during the third period, when first Jerry Denning, then Garrity, scored on steal-and-break plays. Garrity, one of the best college players in this area, just about summed up the whole game as he moved in unopposed, after completely fooling the Harvard defense: B.U. had it; the Crimson didn't.
