Brew, Beauty, Bop Headline Freshman Smoker Program

Talent, Raffle Round Out 'Folies' Tonight

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

All the beer the Class of 1953 can drink plus a wide variety of feminine pulchritude will be offered at 8:15 p.m. tonight when this year's Freshman Smoker, the "Folies Bourgeois," invades Sanders Theatre and Memorial Hall.

Lily Saunders, well-known night club singer, who last appeared at Chicago's College Inn, will head the list of entertainers, while the Crimson Stompers and the Dunster Dunces will provide the music for the "Folies."

According to Michael G. Yamin '53, chairman of the Smoker Committee, Arlene Francis and Al Capp may still appear although prior commitments may keep them away. The Smoker's roster, however, includes many professional entertainers from Boston and New York.

Dancers on Program

Comedy dancer Marie Tiffany, who has recently worked on the stages of Radio City Music Hall and the Paramount Theatre, will perform along with Chick Carmen, who is appearing at the French Village. A duet of Alice O'Leary and Guy Guarine, both currently at the Darbury Room, will also entertain.

Chief among the undergraduate performers is juggler Hugh S. Shepley '51. Thomas Foran will act as master of ceremonies during the various performances.

Following the entertainment, the Smoker will raffle off a Victor radio, books, a shirt, and other articles. At this point in the festivities, girls from six different colleges will get a chance to show off in the Smoker's beauty contest. Lasell, Pine Manor, Sargent, Simmons, Wellesley, and Wheelock have all entered contestants.

The Annex declined an invitation because the Dean's Office was not "in sympathy" with the idea.

Chug-a-Lug Contest

A mass exodus to Memorial Hall will take place at about 10:30 p.m., where beer by the keg and coke by the case will be served along with other refreshments. As part of the stag activities, the Smoker Committee is holding a beer chug-a-lug contest with one entry from each hall.

To the dorm with the best beer drinker will go a souvenir beer keg.

The evening will end with a jazz session by the Crimson Stompers. There is also a possibility that a contingent from the musical, "Lend an Ear," will appear.
