The Department of Comparative Philology will be called the Department of Linguistics from now on, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences decided Wednesday. The Faculty also decided to rechristen the Department of Indic Philology the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies.

The Faculty further voted to establish a committee to explore the problem of advanced work in near Eastern Studies. This committee will seek to coordinate the various courses offered by different departments on the Near and Middle east.
