Trib's 2nd Story Renews Claim of Red Menace Here

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"Flery-eyed Red admits he's a Harvard grad," the "Chicago Tribune" headlined its second article on alleged Communist activity at the University. The story, which appeared Monday, refers to Daniel Boone Schirmer '37, legislative agent for the Communist party.

Schirmer testified against a bill to outlaw the Communist party at a Massachusetts State House hearing in March. So did a lot of other Harvard men, charges Tribune columnist William Fulton who spent a week here last month.

Only two persons now connected with the University were mentioned in the entire story. Fulton charged President Conant with failure to crack down on Reds. Albert S. Coolidge '15, professor of Chemistry, belonged to "Communist front" organizations, the article said.

Fulton charged that Edna Brown, state chairman of the Labor Youth League, appeared in opposition to the anti-Red bill, after a pamphlet by Benjamin J. Davis, Jr. interested he rin Communism. Davis attended the Law School, he pointed out.

John Reed Club "Underground"

The "expose" mentions alleged leftist organizations to which Schirman belonged. All are now non-existant. Fulton said students here informed him that the John Reed Club, which was disbanded this year, "has gone underground."
