MacNamara Succeeds Deceased Councilman

Thomas M. MacNamara, long-time opponent of both the city manager and proportional representation systems, was elected over the weekend to fill an unexpired term in the Cambridge City Council.

MacNamara replaces the late Francis L. Sennott, who died a little over a week ago. Under Cambridge's proportional representation voting, the new councilman was chosen by tabulating the votes of the second choices on Sennott's first choice ballots. This gave MacNamara a clear majority for the position.

In 1938, the new councilman led an unsuccessful attempt to separate Harvard from Cambridge because he claimed Harvard was not paying enough to Cambridge.

The Cambridge Civic Association--non-partisan reform group--still retains its majority of five. MacNamara, like Sonnet, is an independent.
