Squash at its best comes to the University today when the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Singles Championship opens at the Hemenway Gymnasium, Seeded first in the field of 48 from 14 schools as play begins this morning is the Crimson's Charlie Ufford. Ufford lost to Henry Foster '51 in last year's all-College final.
Seeded second is Cecil North of Princeton. Williams' Dick Squires is rated third, with Rick Gaunt of the University of Toronto fourth. Navy's John Organ and Penn'z Dick Stewart are fifth and sixth respectively. Seeded seventh is Dartmouth's Steve Foster, and Army's Dan Hutchinson is eight.
These eight, and eight others, drew byes in the first round of play, and will not appear until 1:20 p.m. this afternoon, when the second round begins. Crimson Coach Jack Barnaby emphasized that all matches will be played on courts with galleries for spectators.
Barnaby was optimistic, saying he expected "great things from our two, three, and four players. Dave Watts, Captain Jim Bacon, and Wis Wood." He added that Yale Coach John Skillman was also relying heavily on his second and third men, as are other coaches. "Because of the slight shades of differences between players, there are many so-called dark horses in this tournament," he concluded.
First and second rounds will be played today, with third and fourth rounds tomorrow. The semi-finals and the final round will be played on Sunday. A consolation tournament round will be played for losers in the first and second rounds.
All players entering the tourney are members of teams in the Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association, which includes Toronto and McGill.
