Ball Team, BU Tie, 6-6, as Arnold Stars In Relief, Johnson Homers

By Winthrop Knowlton

Stuffy McInnis was fit to be tied yesterday and tied he was, too, 6 to 6, by Boston University. After a wild seventh inning, in which the Crimson climaxed a long uphill drive by scoring three runs, only to have the Terriers come back with two of their own, the umpires stepped in and halted the scheduled nine-inning contest at Nickerson Field because of darkness.

The varsity got off to a bad start. Starter Bob Ward, who was wild again, could not retire a man, and B.U. scored four quick tallies with the benefit of only one hit. Then, with sophomore John Arnold pitching brilliant two-hit ball over the next six innings, the Crimson rallied and pulled ahead, 6 to 4, in the top of the seventh.

Agganis Starts Rally

Harry Agganis, however, opened the last of the seventh for the Terriers with a walk. Following a force play and a fly ball to center, shortstop Don Russell kept the home team's hopes alive by beating out an infield hit. Skip Campbell then dropped a single into centerfield and when Dick Clasby momentarily fumbled the ball Russell came tearing all the way home from first to tie the score.

Ward will probably remember yesterday's first inning for a long time to come. He began by walking the first two batters on eight straight pitches. Agganis then tagged a three-and-one pitch for a single, bringing in the first run. A double steal produced a second tally when shortstop Ed Krinsky dropped Walsh's throw.

When Gastall walked. Ward went out and Arnold came in. A sacrifice moved the runners along, a wild pitch scored Agganis, and an error by Walsh on a throw to the plate by Russ Johnson made it 1 to 0.

Johnson Connects

Johnson's home run in the fifth off starter Dick Kowalski, with Krinsky and Ralph Robinson on base, put the visitors back in the ball game. Johnson, who also got two other hits, has come to the plate 12 times in three contests and reached base on ten of them.

In the top of the seventh, with the Crimson still trailing, 4 to 3. Robinson led off with a walk and Johnson singled him to second. When Walsh beat out a bunt, filling the bases. B.U.'s coach Harry Cleverly drew his infield in for a play at the plate. A moment later Ben Akillian punched a ground ball through the left side, bringing in Robinson and Johnson. A long drive to center by Clasby, off a new Terrier pitcher, Norm Luoni, scored Walsh and ended the Crimson scoring for the day.
