Dean of the Divinity School Willard L. Sperry yesterday resigned and the Corporation appointed George H. Williams, lecturer on Church History, to serve as Acting Dean.
Senior dean of the University in number of years service, Dean Sperry continued beyond the normal retirement age to work on plans for the reorganization of the Divinity School.
For 30 years, Dean Sperry has been in charge of the Divinity School, and for 25 years, has been principal preacher in Memorial Church.
Sperry's resignation will take effect July 1. From that time until a permanent dean is found, Williams will head the School.
Under a $5,000,000 reorganization plan, the new dean will be selected by an interdenominational committee of clergymen.
So far, the Corporation has found no replacement for Sperry on the Board of Preachers.
Williams joined the Faculty in 1946. He is ordained in both the Congregational and Unitarian Ministries.
