Council Disbands Freedoms Group; Also Decides to Drop Polling Plan

Votes New Committee Because YRC Feud Broke Agreement

Because of squabbles within its Committee of Undergraduate Organizations on Academic Freedom, the Student Council last night disbanded the Committee, replacing it with a new group.

Anthony C. Beilenson '54, chairman of the first Committee, said it was abolished because "it was evident that the Young Republicans will not work with the committee." The Young Republicans, one of six undergraduate organizations on the Academic Freedom committee, had refused to sign a joint statement prepared with the other member groups.

Clifford L. Alexander '55, sponsor of the motion which replaced the former committee with a strictly-Council group, said that the Council had "failed to anticipate some of the problems that might arise from the make-up of the original committee."

Alexander's Motion Passed

Beilenson made a motion that his group be abolished. The Council instead passed Alexander's motion which sets up a new "Student Council Committee on Academic Freedom." This group will consider forums, polls, statements, and information on the subject of academic freedom. Any action by the new committee must meet the approval of the Council, however.

In a statement for the Council, Alexander said that the members left that Beilenson had followed the original procedure adopted last spring "as precisely as possible."

The new committee will be made up of three members of the Student Council, with one of them serving as chairman.
