A political forum scheduled for this evening by four Radcliffe organizations had to be cancelled because of failure to find a Republican speaker. Radcliffe Students for Democratic Action initiated the panel, which was to have been an evaluation of the Eisenhower Administration.
Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, who had accepted the SDA invitation, commented last night, "I can understand why my Republican colleagues are reluctant to defend the Eisenhower administration; but I still regret the fact that we could not discuss the situation in public."
The Radcliffe Young Republicans Club, Association for Minority Problems, and Student Government Association agreed to co-sponsor the forum, to take place in the Cabot Hall living room. Several faculty members were invited to represent the Republican point of view, but they were unable to appear. The SDA-led project was planned as an appraisal of the domestic and international aspects of the political, economic, and military policies of the present administration.
Schlesinger is on the Executive Board of Massachusetts Americans for Democratic Action, and has spoken at many student-sponsored forums at the University. Last year he attacked a prevalent lack of interest in current events among students.
