All-College Blast

It seems that this year's All College Weekend may include a bathing beauty contest. Visiting House Committees recently, Crimson Key members proposed that each House choose a Queen at its Friday night dance. The beauties would then parade before the Big Dance Saturday night in the grand finale.

This latest aberration shows what happens when weekends get out of hand. Last year's frenzied whirl, with its three days of bowlers, water pistols, and Charles River seating assignments, was more than even the less conservative could take. This year, the Key is trying to equal, if not surpass, last year's blast.

The Weekend has always been more an attempt to raise money for the Crimson Key than a College service project. What differentiates it from money-raising functions like the student-movie business is this: by ballooning itself to the point where it tries to include everyone in the College, the Weekend smothers the under graduate's social freedom, and casts him, at least for one weekend, into the mold of Joe College, desperately trying to have an organized good time.

We can have no quarrel with many of the Weekend's events. Crew races, band concerts, and House dances are good entertainment, when taken separately. But they lose their individuality in a three-day fun fling topped off by a bathing beauty contest.

Unless the Key slows the pace a bit the Week-end will become, as last year, one big blur of indistinguishables. In that case, we might better look for our bathing beauties on some far off beach, when the Key springs its lovelies at the Indoor Athletic Building.
