Dunster Favored to Capture Intramural Basketball Title

On the House

(This is the first of two articles dealing with the House Basketball League. The teams discussed here are from Dunster, Winthrop, Kirkland, and Adams Houses.)

With four games under its belt, Dunster definitely looks like the strongest team in a very strong "A" House League.

The Funsters, with a three-win one-loss record, will face their toughest tests when they play Lowell today and Winthrop next week. If they can take both of these contests they are expected to walk off with the league title.

Dunster opened its season by routing Eliot, Dudley, and Kirkland in quick succession. Leverett used a tight defense to hand the Funsters their only loss, 46 to 42.

With only one senior in its starting line-up, Winthrop has come along surprisingly well with a 3-2 record. The Puritans feel that once their three sophomores and one junior have overcome early game jitters, the club should start to roll. The load of the team falls on Rudy Phillips, only senior and a consistent scorer.

The three sophomores who have made the first five are led by Dave Bodiker and Art Siler, who were on the freshman squad last year.

Last year's champion, Kirkland, lost almost its whole team by graduation, but after dropping its first two games, the Deacons have pulled even in their league record.

The team has been led by 6 foot 5 inch Bob Higgins, Red Brennan, and John Green, 6'3".

Very short on experience, Adams has only been able to capture one of its five starts. A sophomore, Ike Scott, has sparked the team with his high scoring. The Gold Coasters are hoping that once Scott and his teammates get started, they might prove the "spoilers" of the league.

"B" League

If the Funsters have a good chance to take the "A" title, they are a cinch to run off with the "B" championship. The only team which looks as if it might give Dunster a fight is Kirkland. Kirkland took three of its first four, but then was blasted by Dunster, 35-18.

Undefeated in its four games, the Dunster B's are loaded with depth. Practically the whole team which dropped only one game last year has returned. Don Spenser, Bob Walser, Tony Van Ye, Nelson Lambort, and Harold Collard have all played together before.

Kirkland is led by George Jacobs, Harold Sadowsky, and 6-foot 4-inch John Fidler.

Bob Cowles, better known as a wingback, has given Adams enough strength to win two of its five contests. But Adams' toughest problem has not been to beat the opposition, but to get enough men to play.
