Crimson Jayvees Defeat Dean 7-0 In Final Minutes

Hurricane Hasel and Dean Academy threatened most of yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field. But junior varsity fullback Ed Galvin provided a storm of his own by racing the clock to score the lone touchdown of the afternoon late in the fourth period and give the Crimson a 7 to 0 victory.

The Leverett House sophomore, returning from an injury suffered earlier in the game, picked up bouncing lateral pass from quarterback Bob Hastings and bolted 16 yards in the last two and a half minutes. Hastings kicked the extra point.

The visitors from Franklin, Mass were on the verge of scoring twice during the game. A Dean touchdown pass, caught out of the end son, was ruled incomplete, just as the first half ended.

Late in the third quarter, the Jayvees recovered a fumble on their own 4-yard line to stymie a final Dean threat.

Offense Bogs Down

The Crimson, offense until the last moments, stalled more often than it started. Passers Joe Crehore and Hastings were able to complete only two out of ten passes, good for just 15 yards. The Jayvee ground attack, led by Galvin, Jim Damils, and Ray Henry, gained large amounts of yardage in sporadic bursts. But 85 yards in penalties stopped the team's drives at strategic moments.

All told, the Crimson picked up about 200 yards on the ground. Dean hit on three out of ten passes of 55 yards, and added 250 yards gained on the ground.

Yesterday's victory for Coach Norm Shepard's team followed a 14 to 0 opening game loss to Brown last week.

The Jayvees meet their Dartmouth counterparts at Soldiers Field on Friday afternoon.
