Football fans should find it warm this afternoon at Soldiers Field, but not as hot as yesterday, when the temperature hit 86 degrees--the all-time Boston area high for October 1 since 1881.

The Weather Bureau predicts mid-70 degree readings this afternoon, with possible slight showers near evening. Little cloudiness is expected. Morning forecast is for cloudless skies.

Although temperatures the past few days have been above the area averages, the month of September as a whole was somewhat cooler than the norm.
