James F. Meeker '56 kept his pipe going for 77 minutes and 43 seconds last night to set a new local record for continuous pipe-smoking. He received a new briar and will get a free trip to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the finals Nov. 8.

The contest at PBH grew tense as one by one the nine entrants began to falter. A graduate student at the Law School, Alan Hunt, came in second, puffing for 53 minutes, with Ira J. Rimson '56 lasting 46 minutes to place third. The New England record was 74 minutes.

Everyone present was given a measured amount of tobacco and five minutes and an unlimited supply of matches to light their pipes. No fancy pipes were used, although several briars were brought for show. For those who did not bring their own pipes the sponsors of the contest distributed corn-cob pipes to be used.

The Pipe said Tobacco Council sponsored the event which was run by their local members with the hope that it will become an annual event.
