HLU May Oppose Phone Rates Here

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Liberal Union may oppose the rate increase being sought by various Massachusetts telephone companies, Christopher Niebuhr '56, Political Action Chairman of the group said last night.

The State Department of Public Utilities will begin a hearing at the State House today to determine whether the rate increase should be granted. The State ADA has already indicated that it will oppose the plan, and has prepared a nine-page mimeographed booklet listing its reasons for opposition.

While the Liberal Union has taken no official stand, Niebuhr has said that he may attend the hearing. "If the hearing doesn't end today, it is possible that the Liberal Union will take a definite position at our meeting tonight. There is only one chance in a hundred that we will not oppose the rate increase if we do take an official position," he said.
