Wrestling Team Wins, 16-12, As Weight Beats Lord Jeffs

By Richard T. Cooper

Amherst wrestlers won on the mat but lost on the seales in the IAB Saturday afternoon handing the sadly conditioned Crimson varsity a 16-12 victory in its first Ivy League match.

The Lord Jeffs took four of the seven contests, all on points, lost two decisions, and suffered one pin, leaving the mat score Amherst 12, Crimson 11. The victory margin came at the scales where the Jeffs forfeited the 167-pound bout.

Crimson captain Phil Burnaman scored the only pin of the day, squashing Bob Thompson under a half nelson in 7:21 of the 147-pound contest. The rest of the varsity's points were scored by Ed Keating at 137 (6 to 5) and Dick Hook at 157. Keating's margin came on a penalty against his opponent, Jim White, for illegal use of the hands.

Of the two, Hook's was decidedly the stronger win. He scored two on the takedown, then chose the defensive position where his superior height aided a quick reverse. His strength did not fade and he won, 4 to 2.

On the other side of the score book, Amherst opened with a victory when Winfield Danielson outlasted an initially stronger Tatsuo Arima for a 5-3 win at 123; the Jeffs followed with another as Dick Danielson shut out sophomore John Winthrop 5 to 0.

The highly touted Amherst heavyweights also came through as predicted. Captain Duncon Patten outpointed the Crimson's Casper Cronk 4 to 0 in the unlimited class.

At 167 the varsity's Bob Gilmor lost the closest match of the day, 7-5, to Fred Felton. Gilmor almost flattened his opponent several times, but each time Felton slipped off the mat
