Conant Arrives Here Early For Unofficial 4 Day Visit

Ex-President Conant crept into Cambridge a day ahead of schedule, early yesterday morning, for his first lengthy visit here since his appointment as U. S. High Commissioner of Germany.

He arrived in Cambridge without official ceremonies, and without a police escort. He is travelling with one attache, and has no official engagements while in Cambridge, excluding a dental appointment this morning the State Department said last night.

His visit here will end Thursday, when he goes to New Haven to deliver the Stirling Lecture. He will then fly to Michigan to deliver a non-political speech on education at the Michigan State centennial day ceremonies.

President Eisenhower will consult with Conant the following week in Washington concerning German rearmament and West German independence. In addition, the recent fall of the Mendes-France government is expected to be one of the major topics of discussion. Conant will probably also attend hearings on the German budget.

He will not be in the United States for more than two weeks, the State Department said. The purpose of the visit is mainly to deliver the Michigan state address.

Though arriving in Cambridge inconspicuously, Conant was spotted by a CRIMSON photographer talking to a student last night. He attended a tea with President Pusey yesterday afternoon, and will be visiting friends for the next four days.

He has been in Cambridge twice since becoming German High commissioner two years ago, but both visits were very brief.
