Varsity Golf Team Defeats Massachusetts, Amherst, but Loses to Holy Cross Squad

The varsity golf team lost to Holy Cross, 4 to 3, but defeated the University of Massachusetts by the game score in a triangular match Friday, and downed Amherst 6 to 1 on Saturday.

Against Holy Cross, Crimson Captain Ted Cooney lost to John Tosca, one down, in the first position. At number two, Brock Stokes was downed by Jack McDermott, 2 and 1, and the varsity's Bob Ornsteen fell to Phelan by the same score. The Crimson's Jim Jones in the four spot beat Dan Dailey, 3 to 2, and teammate Jim Bailey took Bob Cooney, Ted's brother, one up. Varsity number six man, Bruce Thurmond, was one down at the end of 18 to Gerwin, and the Crimson's seven man Roger Fleischman lost one down on the 20th hole to Dane.

In the number one match with Dave Damon of Massachusetts, Cooney won on the 20th hole. Stokes lost to Barr at two, 3 and 2; Ornsteen defeated Getchel, 4 and 3; Jones lost to Holton, 2 and 1; Bailey triumphed over Packard, 4 and 3; Thurmond defeated Morrison, 6 and 5; and Fleischman lost to Dane on the 20th hole.

Cooney's golf was good enough to take Bud Alan of Amherst, one up, and Bailey swamped his Lord Jeff opponent, 7 and 6. Ornsteen defeated Trout, two up.
