Varsity Sextet Defeats Friars, 5-4, With Four Scores in Third Period

By Gavin R. W. scott

Providence, R.I., January 10--Crafty Coney Weliand's shift may not make him as famous as Lou Boudreau yet it is apparently yielding good results. But it almost didn't tonight at the Rhode Island Auditorium as the Crimson barely slipped past Providence College, 5 to 4.

The schoolboys supporting the home team had nearly torn the place apart in stomping "Encore! Encore!" as the Friars rolled up an impressive 4 to 1 lead after a third of the final period had expired.

The two new forward combinations, tested with success in Saturday's win over Dartmouth, gallantly rose to the occasion. Bob Owen, Lyle Guttu, and Pete Summers, encouraged by a fluke screen shot score earlier by Dennis Little all batted the puck past hapless Providence goalie Eddie Hornstein in the closing ten minutes to pull the surprise win. The Friars upset the Crimson in a pre-Christmas Garden match by a score exactly the reverse of tonight's.

The first period started fast for the Crimson. Bob Owen rammed in a 12-feet rebound of Joe Crehore's at 1:28 and from then on both teams played cautiously.

Things looked dark indeed for Harvard at the start of the final period when two Providence scores, again resulting from poor backchecking and ragged defense, came before the nine-minute mark. The Crimson struck back, though harassed by the strongly partisan crowd which lined the boards behind Flynn's cage.

Little scored at 9:51 from Summers and Cleary; Summers tallied at 10:03 from Cleary and Guttu; Bob Owen whipped a thirty-feeter unassisted past Hornstein at 14:51; and Guttu converted a John Copeland and Summers pass sequence at 15:52 into the winning goal.
